Traditional Community Fiestas

Throughout the year, several small communities in the Paquera district celebrate traditional fiestas populares—colorful village festivals filled with music, horses, food, and dancing. If you happen to visit Paquera during one of these celebrations, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture up close.

Traditional Community Fiestas

These events are an important part of rural life on the Nicoya Peninsula, bringing together neighbors, families, and visitors in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Río Grande
Each January, the community of Río Grande hosts one of the most anticipated fiestas in the district. The celebration typically lasts several days and includes traditional bull riding events, horseback parades (cabalgatas), live music, dancing, and plenty of local food stands. The festivities reflect the strong ranching traditions of the region and attract visitors from across the peninsula. It is organized by the Rio Grande Community Association.

Vainilla
Shortly after the Río Grande celebrations, the rural community of Vainilla holds its own fiesta, usually in late January or early February. Organized by local volunteers and community groups, this event has a warm village atmosphere where visitors can enjoy rodeo-style events, horse parades, marimba music, dancing, and traditional Costa Rican food. The local Community Association is the organizer.
Paquera

The town of Paquera, the center of the district, celebrates its annual fiestas around April. These festivities tend to be the largest in the area and bring together people from many surrounding communities. Expect concerts, rodeo events, carnival rides, horse parades, food stands, and lively evening dances in the heart of town. The local Asociación Cívica y Cultural de Paquera is the organizer.

Experience the Local Culture
Attending a community fiesta is one of the best ways to experience the authentic culture in Paquera. Visitors are always welcome, and the celebrations offer a lively mix of tradition, music, food, dance, horse parades and community spirit.

Even if your visit doesn’t coincide with one of the local fiestas, there are still many ways to experience the spirit of the community. Throughout the year, local guides and small family‑run businesses offer tours and activities that reflect everyday life in the area—from exploring the calm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya by kayak or paddleboard, to fishing with local captains, visiting nearby islands, or enjoying the natural beauty and wildlife that shape life in Paquera.

These experiences provide another way to connect with the people, traditions, and welcoming atmosphere that make this part of the Nicoya Peninsula so special.
