Kayak and Paddle Boarding
Gliding through the calm waters of Paquera, kayaking and paddle boarding become more than just adventures - they're moments of pure connection with nature.

The Gulf of Nicoya is a paradise for both kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders. Dotted with various islands and sheltered from ocean swells, the Gulf offers endless opportunities for exploration. Many areas, such as the mangrove forests and small river mouths, are more easily accessible by kayak or paddleboard than by motorboat, allowing for a closer connection with nature. From towering cacti to a rich variety of bird species, the islands beckon to be discovered by paddlers of all kinds. However, be mindful that some of the islands are protected, and landing on them is prohibited to preserve their natural beauty. As you gently glide across the calm waters, you may encounter leaping rays, sea turtles, a diverse array of fish, and in season, even whales and dolphins between Negritos and Tortuga Island from August to November.
For those who prefer stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), the calm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya offer a serene and immersive experience. Standing on the board, you get a unique perspective of the surroundings, allowing you to gaze down at the marine life beneath you and across the horizon to spot distant islands. Paddleboarding provides an ideal balance of relaxation and light exercise, as the gentle movements of paddling work your core and improve balance. Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced paddler, the Gulf’s tranquil environment is perfect for all levels.
Both kayaking and paddleboarding rentals are available for independent exploration, instructions and guided tours are also highly recommended. From half-day and full-day adventures to multi-day excursions, different local tour operators cater to every kind of paddler. One of the most extraordinary experiences is the famous bioluminescent night tour, available both by kayak and boat. The bays near Paquera are among the few places in the world with permanent bioluminescence, where the water lights up with glowing algae as your paddle slices through it. This magical kayak experience is not to be missed.
Exploring the Gulf by kayak or paddleboard offers a peaceful escape, with the water, beaches, and surrounding tropical plants and animals creating a serene atmosphere. As you paddle through the quiet waters, you’ll find yourself more attuned to the sights and sounds of nature—bird calls, the splash of a fish, or the rustle of leaves on a distant shore. Both activities provide a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature.
Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, kayaking and paddleboarding in Costa Rica’s Gulf of Nicoya is the perfect way to explore this beautiful region. Let the water guide your journey, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
