The Nicoya Peninsula is quite diverse. One of the most fascinating ecosystems here are the mangroves. OK, but what exactly are mangroves???

Mangroves are shrub and tree species that live around the shoreline in the tropics. They have specialized filtration systems, allowing them to survive in hot, salty and muddy conditions. They are extremely productive ecosystems, being the home to numerous species of crabs, shrimp and shellfish. They are also important nurseries for sharks, rays and various commercially important fish species. The bird life in and around the mangroves is also spectacular.

A great way to get in close and explore the mangroves is by kayak or stand up paddleboard as it is quite shallow. This puts you up close and personal with the wildlife and marine life in and around the mangroves. One of the most accessible mangrove systems is in the bay where the ferry lands. So if you are looking for something different to do, consider exploring the fascinating mangrove forest.
