Halloween on the Water – A Colorful Paddling Tradition in Paquera

Who says Halloween has to be celebrated on land? In Paquera, on Costa Rica’s beautiful Nicoya Peninsula, a group of enthusiastic paddlers has turned Halloween into a fun annual tradition – with costumes, kayaks, paddleboards, and plenty of laughter!
Every year around Halloween, locals and visitors come together for the Remada Halloween, an informal, free community event that combines a love for paddling with a little Halloween creativity.
Costumes, Kayaks, and Paddleboards
Each year brings a new theme, chosen by the organizing group. Participants are encouraged to get creative with their costumes, although dressing up is entirely optional. Whether you arrive in an elaborate outfit or simply your usual paddling gear, everyone is welcome to join the fun.
The adventure typically starts at Bahia Rica at Punta Cuchillo, with paddlers making their way across the beautiful waters of Paquera Bay, exploring the small beaches of Isla Cedros and Isla Jesusita.
Along the route, the group stops at different beaches for playful challenges, friendly competitions, and group activities. These little breaks add plenty of laughter and unexpected moments to the journey!
And, of course, no good Costa Rican gathering would be complete without food. The day usually finishes with a relaxed lunch, giving everyone a chance to share stories and enjoy each other’s company. This year the lunch stop was at the chill beach restaurant Flor de Cedro.
A Different Adventure Every Year
Part of the charm of the Remada Halloween is that no two years are exactly alike. The theme changes, the route varies, and the activities bring new surprises.
But one thing remains the same: the wonderful community spirit and the joy of spending a day together on the water.
It’s also a reminder that Halloween fun has found its way to this little corner of Costa Rica, with a distinctly tropical twist!
