Sport Fishing in Paquera - Big Fishing, Local Experience

When people think about sport fishing in Costa Rica, the country’s large Pacific marinas often come to mind. Paquera offers a different kind of fishing destination - more local and personal, without compromising on the quality of the fishing.

Located at the entrance to the Gulf of Nicoya, Paquera gives anglers access to islands, rocky coastlines, reefs and deeper waters. Depending on season and conditions, inshore fishing can offer opportunities for roosterfish, snapper, jacks and mackerel, among other species.

But fishing from Paquera is not limited to the Gulf. Several local sport fishing charters also head offshore into the Pacific, where anglers can pursue species such as sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna.

Choose your fishing experience

One of the attractions of Paquera is the variety of ways to experience fishing.

You can spend a few hours with a local fisherman in a traditional boat and discover the waters through someone who has known them for years. Or choose a professional sport fishing charter with specialized boats, equipment, captain and crew.

It makes Paquera interesting both for experienced anglers and for visitors who simply want to include an authentic fishing experience in their Costa Rican vacation.

Responsible fishing matters

Excellent fishing grounds also come with responsibility.

Recently, almost 20 captains and crew members from fishing operations in Paquera participated in a workshop on good practices in sport and tourism fishing. The training was provided by FECOP - the Costa Rican Federation of Sport Fishing and organized locally by Visit Paquera and ADEJ (Asociación de Desarrollo para la Juventud de Paquera).

The workshop included responsible fishing practices, catch and release, correct fish handling and Costa Rican regulations.

The goal is to keep raising the standard of fishing tourism in Paquera - providing visitors with a quality and safe experience while protecting the marine resources that make fishing here so special.

DID YOU KNOW? Sport Fishing in Costa Rica

You need a sport fishing permit. Anyone practicing sport fishing in Costa Rica must have the appropriate credential issued by INCOPESCA.

Catch and release matters. Correct handling and release techniques help protect fish populations and give released fish the best possible chance of survival.

There is a limit on the fish you can keep. Costa Rican regulations establish a maximum of five fish per fishing trip per vessel for sport and tourism fishing, with additional restrictions applying to certain species.

Always check current regulations with INCOPESCA or your fishing operator before heading out.

Come for the fishing. Discover Paquera along the way.

Fishing here is also about experiencing the destination: an early morning on the Gulf, islands and coastal scenery, local captains sharing their knowledge, wildlife along the way - and perhaps the excitement of a roosterfish inshore or a day chasing pelagic species offshore.

Paquera combines first-class fishing waters with the character and authenticity of a small coastal community.

We may not have the big marina - but we certainly have the waters, the fish, the knowledge and the passion for fishing.
