On Wednesday, November 20, 2025, Costa Rica's National Technical University made its first of many visits to Paquera to initiate a collaborative project of training Paquera's tourism sector in high need areas and beginning scientific research projects about the biodiversity in the district. The university will provide trainings on identified needs in the tourism sector, such as customer service, business administration, and sales strategies. The university will also begin research projects on Paquera's bioluminescence and the migration patterns of humpback whales in the gulf of Nicoya along the coastlines of Paquera. The projects will be collaborative and will include representation from the committee, the university, and individuals from he tourism industry.

Paquera is very excited to begin improving our tourism industry and ensuring that our visitors have the experience and adventure of a lifetime. We look forward to learning more about the conservation of our marine life through the help of the National Technical University and commitment of our community to build sustainable, eco-friendly tourism.

By partnering with the local government, we're revolutionizing bioluminescence conservation.

The Paquera as a Sustainable Touristic Destination presented the idea of creating a Comision with the local municipality to create a light pollution regulation to help protect the visibility of Bioluminescence (seen in the image above). This regulation would be the first of its kind, protecting the natural treasure that makes Paquera so unique...365 days a year of visible, abundant bioluminescence.

Right now, there is little scientific information about the bioluminescence in Paquera, and as much as we want to protect it, we don't have the scientific backing telling us how. The National Technical University of Costa Rica will be partnering with our committee for a research project to help us understand and protect the bioluminescence in our waters. This an important step in ensuring sustainable tourism and development in our community.
