On Saturday, June 7th, 2025, the district of Paquera welcomed a new chapter in community-driven youth development with the successful launch of a Children’s Workshop on Good Practices for Sportfishing. This inspiring event was organized by the Asociación de Desarrollo para la Juventud de Paquera (ADEJ) through its Sustainable Tourism Subcommittee, in collaboration with FECOP (Federación Costarricense de Pesca), Isla Chiquita, and the international educational program Passport to Fishing from IGFA (International Game Fish Association).

This workshop marks the beginning of a series of initiatives designed to empower local youth while fostering environmental awareness and sustainable tourism in the region.

More than 35 children from across the Paquera district, including 10 girls, participated in this hands-on experience. Guided by experienced local sportfishing captains and FECOP representatives, the kids learned about assembling fishing rods and reels, tying fishing knots, identifying local marine species, and the importance of catch and release as a responsible fishing practice.

The day was filled with learning, laughter, and plenty of inspiration. Thanks to the support of Bahía Rica Adventures, Isla Chiquita, and Tortuga Vida Boutique Hotel, participants also enjoyed delicious refreshments and received their official IGFA Fishing Passport and a diploma at the end of the workshop.

More than just a fun event, this workshop represents a key step toward building environmental stewardship and inclusive opportunities for the next generation in Paquera. By engaging youth directly in sustainable marine practices, the ADEJ aims to create lasting impact and strengthen the community’s ties to its natural heritage.

This is just the beginning. Upcoming activities include:

·        A local children’s fishing tournament

·        A Good Practices workshop for captains and boat crews

·        The Women’s Nautical School, promoting inclusion and opportunity for women in sport fishing and marine tourism
