When Science Meets Tourism: Bringing Bioluminescence to Life

What happens when tourism and science come together? In Paquera, the answer is shared knowledge, new discoveries, and a deeper understanding of one of our most fascinating natural wonders: bioluminescence.
Visit Paquera recently joined forces with researchers from the Universidad Nacional (UNA) at La Alfombra Azul, the annual event organized by FECOP, Costa Rica’s Sport Fishing Federation.
Together, we highlighted the importance of connecting scientific research with tourism and how this collaboration can contribute to more sustainable tourism experiences.
Looking Beyond the Blue Glow
Bioluminescence is one of Paquera’s most magical natural attractions. But what actually creates that spectacular blue glow in the water?
At La Alfombra Azul, participants had the opportunity to discover the science behind the magic.
With the help of UNA researchers, visitors observed dinoflagellates, the microscopic algae responsible for bioluminescence in our waters, through a microscope.
We also introduced another fascinating group of light-producing organisms: bioluminescent bacteria, presented in laboratory cultures.
And then came the highlight: turning off the lights and watching the bacteria glow!
Tourism and Science: Learning from Each Other
In Paquera, we believe tourism and scientific research have much to offer each other.
Local guides contribute valuable knowledge from their daily experiences on the ocean, while researchers help us better understand the marine environment.
Through collaborations with institutions such as UNA and the University of Costa Rica (UCR), we are strengthening the connection between scientific research, local communities, and sustainable tourism.
These partnerships help us improve visitor education while encouraging greater appreciation and protection of our marine ecosystems.
Understanding Nature to Protect It
Bioluminescence is more than a beautiful attraction. It is an opportunity to inspire curiosity, share knowledge, and promote conservation.
A special thank you to UNA and UCR for their collaboration through their ongoing research programs and for helping bring science closer to our communities.
Because sustainable tourism is not just about experiencing nature. It is about understanding it and working together to protect it.
