A day of Fishing and Learning for Young Anglers at Playa Pochote, Paquera

On June 6, 2026, Playa Pochote became the setting for a day filled with learning, excitement, and plenty of fishing action as 33 children and youth participated in the third edition of the Paquera Youth Fishing Workshop and Tournament.

A Day of Learning and Fishing

Organized by the Asociación para la Juventud de Paquera (ADEJ) through the Visit Paquera committee, the event combined education, conservation, and hands-on fishing experiences for local youth. We brought together young fishing enthusiasts from across the Paquera district for a unique opportunity to learn about sport fishing while enjoying a friendly tournament in a beautiful natural setting.

Workshop and Tournament Rotation

Participants were divided into Minis and Juvenil categories. The Minis began the morning fishing along the mangrove edge at Playa Pochote while the Juveniles attended an educational workshop. After the morning snack break, the groups switched activities, ensuring every participant experienced both the workshop and the fishing tournament.

Learning Through the IGFA Passport to Fishing Program

The workshop introduced participants to fishing equipment, knots, species identification, conservation principles, and responsible sport fishing practices. The educational content was based on the IGFA Passport to Fishing program, made available through FECOP.

Tournament Highlights

Awards recognized the largest fish, smallest fish, most fish caught, and greatest variety of species caught in each category. Two participants also received special recognition for exceptional casting skills.

Community Support

Every participant left with a prize thanks to the generosity of sponsors, volunteers, local businesses, institutions, and community members. Donations helped provide prizes, refreshments, fresh fruit, and lunch for both participants and volunteers, while others contributed essential logistics such as tents, tables, chairs, and other equipment needed throughout the day. Special thanks go to Bahía Rica Adventures, Isla Chiquita Glamping, and Eagle Ray Tours for providing experienced fishing captains who led the workshops, served as tournament judges, and shared their passion and knowledge with the next generation of anglers. We also extend our gratitude to camping Don Trino for providing access to their facilities.

Looking Ahead

Sport fishing remains an important part of Paquera’s tourism industry and coastal culture. Seeing young people embrace the sport is encouraging for the future of both conservation and tourism. ADEJ and Visit Paquera look forward to continuing these opportunities for local youth.
