One of the greatest joys of visiting Paquera is discovering that it is more than beautiful beaches, lush forests, and incredible wildlife. It is also a community where traditions are alive, neighbors come together, and visitors are welcomed into authentic Costa Rican culture.
Every year, communities across Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula celebrate the Annexation of Nicoya, commemorating the historic decision in 1824 when the Partido de Nicoya became part of Costa Rica. In Paquera, the celebration takes on a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that reflects the strong sense of community that defines this special destination.
This year's festivities were centered around the local families, especially the children. The town came alive with free horseback riding, volleyball, stunt bicycle tournament, face painting, trampolines, inflatable play areas, traditional games, music, and plenty of laughter. Children proudly dressed in traditional Costa Rican clothing while local dance groups performed colorful folkloric dances that celebrated the region's rich cultural heritage.
One of the highlights was a beautiful dance performance by the Asociación de Adultos Mayores, reminding everyone that traditions are passed from one generation to the next and that the entire community plays a role in keeping them alive.
For visitors, these local celebrations offer something truly special. Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, tourists have the opportunity to experience Costa Rican culture firsthand—meeting local families, enjoying traditional food, listening to live music, and sharing in celebrations that have been part of community life for generations.
Events like these are a wonderful reminder that sustainable tourism is not only about protecting nature. It is also about preserving local traditions, supporting community events, and creating meaningful connections between visitors and the people who call Paquera home.
While the dates of local festivals vary throughout the year, visitors are often pleasantly surprised to discover community celebrations taking place during their stay. If you're lucky enough to be in Paquera during one of these events, don't hesitate to join in. You'll leave with more than beautiful photos—you'll take home memories of genuine Costa Rican hospitality and an authentic cultural experience.
Visit Paquera, and discover not only a beautiful destination, but a vibrant community where traditions are proudly shared with everyone who visits.
