Learning More About Our Coastal Wildlife - Training for guides and captains in Paquera

In Paquera, the sea and the coastline are an important part of everyday life – and also an important part of our local tourism. Boat tours, snorkeling, sport fishing, wildlife observation and visits to our islands and beaches all bring guides and captains into close contact with the rich marine and coastal environment of the Gulf of Nicoya.

That is why we were very happy to recently welcome the Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (INA) to Paquera for the course “Biology of Species of Interest for Tourism in Coastal Areas.”

The course brought together local captains and guides who wanted to learn more about the species found along our coasts and in our surrounding waters. Understanding the biology, behavior and ecological importance of these species gives those working directly with visitors more knowledge to share during their tours and activities.

For us, this type of training is an important part of developing tourism in Paquera. Good guiding is not only about taking visitors to beautiful places. It is also about being able to explain what they are seeing, encourage respect for wildlife and help people better understand the natural environment they are visiting.

We are especially pleased to see local captains and guides taking advantage of opportunities like this to continue learning and improving the service they provide.

Through Visit Paquera, a project of the Asociación de Desarrollo para la Juventud de Paquera (ADEJ), we continue working to coordinate training opportunities here in Paquera, making them more accessible to the people who live and work in our community.

A big thank you to INA for bringing this course to Paquera, and to everyone who participated and invested their time in learning more about the incredible coastal environment we are fortunate to call home.
