Local Tourism Businesses Strengthen Their Knowledge of Bioluminescence to Enhance Visitor Experiences in Paquera

Bioluminescence has become one of the most recognized natural attractions in Paquera and this part of the Gulf of Nicoya. Every year, visitors from around the world come to the region hoping to experience the magical glow that illuminates the water at night, making bioluminescence one of the district's most important nature-based tourism attractions.

As Paquera continues to position itself as a sustainable tourism destination, protecting and understanding the natural resources that attract visitors is becoming increasingly important. Among these resources, the bioluminescence stands out as a unique phenomenon that depends on healthy marine ecosystems and responsible tourism practices.

To help strengthen local knowledge about this valuable natural attraction, the Comité de Turismo Sostenible - Visit Paquera, an initiative of the Asociación de Desarrollo Especifico para la Juventud de Paquera (ADEJ), organized a specialized training course on bioluminescence in partnership with the Universidad Técnica Nacional (UTN).

The two-day workshop was led by biologist Silvia Chaves Ramírez, who shared scientific knowledge about the organisms responsible for bioluminescence, the environmental factors that influence the phenomenon, and the importance of conserving the ecosystems that make these experiences possible.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the course was the strong response from the local tourism sector. A total of 33 guides representing 19 tourism businesses from throughout the district completed the training, demonstrating a shared commitment to improving the quality of the experiences offered to visitors.

While the beauty of bioluminescence speaks for itself, a knowledgeable guide can transform a tour into something much more meaningful. We experience that visitors are increasingly interested in understanding the natural environments they explore, and guides who have a deeper understanding of the phenomenon are better equipped to answer questions, explain the science behind the glow, and help guests develop a greater appreciation for the marine ecosystems of the Gulf of Nicoya.
