Visit Paquera – Meet the Giants of the Gulf: Humpback Whale Season

Every year, the calm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya become a temporary home for one of the ocean's most spectacular visitors—the humpback whale.

From July through October, humpback whales migrate to the warm tropical waters of Costa Rica to give birth and care for their calves. This makes the Gulf of Nicoya one of the best places in the country to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Several local tour operators offer whale-watching excursions departing from both Pochote, Paquera, Playa Pajaros and Playa Blanca. While no wildlife encounter can ever be guaranteed, sightings during the season are common, and many visitors are rewarded with unforgettable moments as whales surface, breathe, slap their tails, or even launch themselves out of the water in spectacular breaches.

One of the things that makes whale watching in the Gulf of Nicoya so special is the calm, protected water. The conditions often allow boats to observe the whales from a respectful distance while still providing incredible views and outstanding photo opportunities. Seeing a mother swimming alongside her calf is an experience that stays with visitors for a lifetime.

·       Humpback whales can grow up to 16 meters (52 feet) long and weigh as much as 40 tonnes.

·       The whales visiting Costa Rica travel thousands of kilometers from feeding grounds as far south as Antarctica.

·       Newborn calves are usually around 4–5 meters long and can weigh close to one tonne at birth.

·       Humpback whales are famous for their beautiful songs, which can travel many kilometers underwater.

·       Each whale has a unique pattern on the underside of its tail, allowing researchers to identify individual whales—just like a fingerprint.
